Broken Open

Unsent

Bridge

(12-17-02)

Ambassadors
From your world
Come to me with
Cheshire grins,
The knife already
Firmly in my back.
Sent, I assume
To assuage,
To repent,
To take away the sting of
Things unbearable.
Another time and place
This could have worked.
I could have played,
Could have stayed
With you.
The way this
"gift"
Was brought to me,
I pluck my eyes
So I won't see
The things I thought
But doubted like a fool.
A bridge,
Already shattered,
You repair with
Strings.
Ropes untwine.
Threads unwind,
Boards fall out
Beneath our feet.
I see you
On the other side
As you untie
The knot that binds
What's broken.
